A dental prophylaxis is a dental cleaning technique that completely cleans the teeth and gums. Prophylaxis is an important dental treatment for preventing gingivitis and periodontal disease from progressing.

Prophylaxis is a way of keeping the mouth healthy and slowing the progression of gum disease.

The major benefits of this treatment are:

Removal of plaque -

Tartar (also known as calculus) and plaque buildup can cause major periodontal problems both above and below the gum line. Unfortunately, no amount of brushing and flossing at home will eliminate all debris, bacteria, and deposits from gum pockets. A dentist or hygienist with experience and specialized dental equipment is required to detect possibly harmful accumulation.

An improved smile -

Teeth that are discolored or yellowed can significantly impair a smile's beauty. Prophylaxis is a great way to get rid of these unsightly stains on your teeth.

Fresh breath -

Bad breath (or halitosis) is an indication of advanced periodontal disease. Decomposing food particles (perhaps below the gum line) and potential gangrene caused by gum infection create a bad smell. Plaque, calculus, and bacteria removal on a regular basis at our facility can help to greatly reduce halitosis and infection.

Prophylaxis is available in our office. Prophylaxis should be performed twice a year as a preventative step, but every 3-4 months for periodontitis patients. Although gum disease cannot be totally cured, Dr. Mariscal, Dr. Boege, Dr. Munoz, or Dr. Flores-Hutton can use prophylaxis to effectively slow its progression.
