After Tooth Extraction
After tooth extraction, a blood clot should be formed to stop the bleeding process. It also initiates the healing process. To stop the bleeding, you will have to bite on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes. If the issue persists, you will have to bite firmly on the gauze pad for the next 30 minutes to prevent blood flow. Once the blood clot forms, it is desirable not to dislodge or disturb it.
It would help if you stopped drinking alcohol, smoking, rinsing your mouth vigorously, and brushing your teeth for the next 72 hours after the extraction process. Exercise also should be avoided for 24 hours. You may feel some pain and swelling after the extraction. You can keep the swelling to a minimum by placing an ice pack. The dentist may also provide you with pain medications. The swelling usually decreases within 48 hours.
